An Orphan Life Insurance Policy is an existing policy whose original agent is no longer associated with the insurer. The agent’s departure does not, by itself, cancel your contract. Check your premium and cover status directly with the insurer, keep payments updated, and ask how future servicing requests will be handled.
What does an Orphan Life Insurance Policy mean?
“Orphan” describes a gap in the original agent’s servicing relationship. It is not a separate policy that you need to buy. The term matters because a policyholder who relied on an agent for reminders or paperwork may need to establish a direct service channel with the insurer. The regulatory background includes IRDAI’s 2012 guidelines addressing policies left behind when an individual agent exits. Those guidelines have a specific scope and eligibility conditions.
For your own policy, ask the insurer to confirm its current servicing arrangement rather than assuming every agent change meets the same regulatory definition.
Will your Life Insurance cover stop if the agent leaves?
An agent leaving is a servicing event, while cover depends on your policy’s terms and status. Confirm whether the policy is in force, premiums are outstanding, or another contractual status applies. Do not infer that protection has ended, or that it remains unchanged, solely because the original agent is unavailable. Ask for a written status statement showing the next premium due date and any action required. Keep it with your policy schedule and receipts.
If you have received contradictory reminders, ask the insurer which record is correct before making a decision. A servicing request should identify the existing policy clearly so payments and updates reach the right account.
How is an Orphan Policy different from a Lapsed Policy?
An Orphan Policy concerns who helps service the contract. A Lapsed Policy concerns the effect of unpaid premiums under that contract. The two issues can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Some policies may instead continue with reduced paid-up benefits after qualifying conditions have been met. Your policy wording determines the outcome. Do not treat the six-month unpaid-premium description in the historical orphan-allotment guidelines as your cover’s grace period.
Check the grace period and non-payment clauses in the actual policy. Different statuses require different actions. A service change may need only a request, while a lapse may require a revival application.
What should you do first when your agent is unavailable?
Start with the insurer’s official customer service channel and your policy number. Request confirmation of status, the next payment due, and the contact for future service. Then check that your registered mobile number and email are current, so notices reach you directly rather than depending on a former agent.
- Locate the policy schedule, recent receipts, and any service correspondence.
- Ask whether the insurer has changed the servicing contact or whether you should raise requests directly.
- Check registered contact details and ask how to correct any outdated information.
- Record the request reference and retain the written response.
- If a payment is due, use an insurer-approved channel and verify that it appears against the policy.
A useful enquiry is: “Please confirm the current status of my policy, any outstanding premium, the next due date and the authorised contact for ongoing servicing.” This is a suggested request, not a mandatory insurer form.
Can you pay premiums and manage the policy without the original agent?
You can approach the insurer directly for payment options and policy service. Use the channels it officially publishes, and check which requests can be completed online and which need forms or documents. An agent can assist, but you should retain your own access to notices, payment records, and service acknowledgements. Check the payment receipt and subsequent policy record after paying. If money has left your account but the policy still shows unpaid, send the transaction details through the official service channel.
Ask for reconciliation rather than assuming that a bank debit alone confirms the insurer has credited the correct policy.

Can you request another servicing agent?
Ask the insurer whether an authorised servicing agent can be allotted and what process applies to your policy. A request is not evidence of automatic approval or a right to choose any agent. Confirm the new contact through the insurer before sharing policy documents or acting on payment instructions. Servicing allotment is different from changing the policyholder, nominee, or insurer. If someone offers help, ask the company to verify that person’s authority and the permitted service.
Keep requests for routine service separate from any proposal to buy new Insurance. You do not need to accept a new policy merely to enquire about an existing contract.
What if premiums were missed while you were waiting for help?
Contact the insurer promptly and ask which contractual status now applies. If revival is available, request the eligibility conditions, outstanding amount, documents, and confirmation process. Revival may involve assessment of continued insurability. Payment or submission of a request should not be treated as confirmation that full cover has restarted. Ask when revival would become effective if approved and obtain the decision in writing.
Read the revival clause alongside the insurer’s instructions. Do not rely on a general article to establish the cover available during a lapse.

Can a family submit a claim without the original agent?
A claimant can contact the insurer directly to notify a claim and obtain its document checklist. The original agent’s availability should not be used as the starting point for deciding whether to report it. Claim assessment still depends on the contract, the policy’s status, and the supporting information required. Keep the insurer’s claim contact with the policy records and explain to your family where those records are stored.
Ask the claim team which documents and submission channel apply to the case. Avoid assuming that an orphan servicing label either prevents a claim or assures payment.

What can you do if the servicing issue remains unresolved?
Raise a written complaint with the insurer’s grievance redressal officer, attach relevant records, and obtain an acknowledgement. If the response is unsatisfactory or the applicable response period has passed, use IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa route to register and track the grievance. Keep complaint references and responses together. For a dispute requiring further escalation, check the Insurance Ombudsman’s current eligibility and procedure.
Bima Bharosa registration does not assure a particular decision. The portal warns that it does not require payments from complainants. Verify any message asking for a fee to resolve a grievance.
