Permanent disability refers to the state of life insured when she/ he is left completely disabled after an accidental bodily injury or fatal disease. When permanently disabled, an individual is no longer able to work and earn due to injuries.

Description:

A permanent disability is a risk that is generally covered under a life insurance policy. Because, permanent disability can affect the income of the sole breadwinner of the family and they may suffer financially.

When an individual or life insured who has suffered injuries or illness shows no signs of improvement, will not be able to return to work. In this case, the individual will be called permanently disabled. To add further, the insured has been in the state for months with zero signs of improvement.

The type of disability can be loss of limbs or speech or eyesight leaving the individual inefficient to lead a normal life. Some examples of permanent disability are: Irrecoverable or total loss of sight in both eyes.

  • Spinal cord injury that led to paralysis.

  • Traumatic brain injury.

  • Back injury.

  • Irrecoverable loss of sight and loss of limb.

  • Loss by physical separation or total and permanent loss of use of one hand and one foot.

  • Permanent loss or loss of physical separation of both the hands or both the feet.

Under the life insurance policy, the insured can get cover for permanent disability with the rider² covers. Choosing the permanent disability rider² can benefit the family of the insured financially helping them take care of the sudden medical expenses.

Example:

Puja worked with the plastic bag making company. She was the floor manager and was an expert at fixing the machines. One day due to heavy electricity supply, Puja suffered an electric shock while fixing a machine. She fell from the first floor due to which the left portion of her body was damaged.

Pooja was rushed to the hospital where the doctor mentioned that she will not be able to use her left limbs for a long time as she was permanently disabled. This is where Puja’s life insurance policy would compensate her for the loss. Her insurer will pay her a monthly income as mentioned in the policy.
