e-portal for income tax:

On June 7, 2021, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) introduced a new income tax e-filing website. The former e-filing portal, www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, has been replaced with the new portal www.incometax.gov.in. Taxpayers will need to use the new e-portal income tax to submit their income tax returns (ITRs) and conduct other tax-related activities. The interface is being rebuilt to make it more user-friendly for taxpayers, and it will now provide tax return filing and different tax-related services in a more modern and efficient manner.

Features of Income Tax e-Portal

The different features of the existing income tax e-filing portal are –

  • ITR filing

  • Linking of the Adhaar card and PAN card

  • Filing of Audit reports

  • E-verification of ITR

  • Viewing of Form 26AS

  • Lodging grievances online

  • Providing response to e-proceedings

  • Requesting changes in ITR particulars online

  • Request for intimations

  • Request for re-issuing refunds

  • Any mismatch in tax credit can be viewed

  • Responses can be sent in the case of any unpaid income tax demand.



Benefits of Income Tax Department's New e-Portal

The main benefits and features of the new tax e-filing portal include:

  • Free ITR Preparation Software

    The taxpayers will benefit from the ITR preparation free software. Currently, the ITR-1 and ITR-4 software are available both online and offline, with ITR-2 available just online. ITR-3, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7 ITR preparation software will soon be made available. The interactive questions of the software will make e-filing a piece of cake.

  • ITR Processing

    The new user-friendly interface will process a taxpayer's income tax return right away. Taxpayers will receive quick refunds as a result of the quick processing of income tax forms.

  • Pre-filled ITRs

    Some details connected to certain incomes can be pre-filled on the new portal. It might be regarding salary, homeownership, business/ profession, and so on. It also allows for detailed pre-filling of information such as capital gains, salary income, dividends, and interest. When the involved entities upload their SFT and TDS statements, the pre-filling process starts..

  • Multiple Payment Options

    The new gateway will provide a taxpayer with a variety of payment alternatives. Credit cards, RTGS or NEFT, Net Banking and UPI are some of the alternatives available, and they can be used with any taxpayer's account in any bank. It will make tax payments easier. To avoid any difficulties for taxpayers in paying the first instalment of advance tax, the Income Tax administration will make such a facility available after June 18, 2021.

  • Single Dashboard Interaction

    In a single dashboard, a taxpayer may see all transactions, uploads, and pending actions, as well as the follow-up activity..

  • Call Centre Services

    The new e-portal by Income Tax Department is linked to a 'new call centre,' allowing for quick responses to questions. Furthermore, thorough FAQs, videos, tutorials, and chatbot or live agents solve the issues of taxpayers.

  • Mobile Application

    Subsequently, a mobile application will be released including all the new core capabilities of the portal. At any time, the taxpayer can access the app using a mobile network.



Income tax e-portal registration process

The following documents are required for the process:

  • Valid PAN

  • Valid Mobile Number

  • Valid Current Address

  • Valid Email Address, preferably your own


Let us now take a look at the registration process for different categories:

Type 1: As a taxpayer
  • Step 1
    Visit the homepage of the Income Tax Department portal and click on Register

  • Step 2
    Under the Register as a Taxpayer option, enter your PAN and click Validate. An error message appears if the PAN has already been registered or is invalid

  • Step 3
    On the Basic Details page, enter your essential information, including your name, DOB / DOI, gender (if applicable), and residential status, according to your PAN card and then click Continue

  • Step 4
    Individual taxpayers will see the Contact Details page after their PAN has been authenticated. Fill in your contact information, including your primary phone number, email address, and mailing address and click continue to submit

  • Step 5
    Two OTPs are delivered to the primary mobile phone number and email address listed in the contact information. Click Continue after entering the 6-digit OTPs sent to the mobile number and email address.


Type 2: As a CA
  • Step 1
    Click Register on the e-Filing portal's home page.

  • Step 2
    Click Others, then choose Chartered Accountant as the Category, then click Continue

  • Step 3
    On the Basic Details screen, fill in all essential information such as your PAN, name, DOB, membership number, and enrollment date, then click Continue

The procedure is similar for a taxpayer and a CA:

  • Step 1
    Visit the income tax department homepage

  • Step 2
    Enter the Details



Forgot your e-portal login password?

Here is what to do:

  • Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal http://www.incometax.gov.in

  • Click on forgot password

  • Choose the options to reset the password:

  • By receiving OTP on your mobile number registered with the income tax e-filing account or

  • By receiving OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar or

  • By uploading your DSC



Register DSC in income tax e-portal

The process to register DSC

  • Enter your user ID and password to access the e-Filing portal

  • From the Dashboard, navigate to the My Profile page

  • On the left side of the screen, click Register DSC

  • Enter the email address associated with the DSC token. Continue after selecting I have downloaded and installed the emsigner utility.

  • Choose a Provider and a Certificate. Enter the Provider Password here. Click Sign

  • When validation is successful, a success message will be displayed, along with the option to return to the option to return to the Dashboard



Change the mobile number in the income tax e-portal

Given below is how to change mobile number in the e-portal

  • Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal http://www.incometax.gov.in

  • Click the 'Login Here' button and enter your user name, password, and Captcha code

  • The user is asked to update their mobile number and email address before clicking the "Continue" button

  • The user must confirm the contact information and then click the Continue button or change the details, click the Back button

  • A mobile PIN and an email PIN will be sent to the primary mobile number and email address, respectively.

  • Enter your mobile PIN and email PIN in the appropriate fields, then click the Continue button.

  • A success message will be displayed. The user can proceed to the Dashboard by clicking on the "Continue to Login" button
