The Indian Income Tax Act, 1961's Section 203A authorises the use of Form 49B as an application for the issuance of TAN numbers or TAN deductions and payment account numbers to beneficiaries qualified to claim tax deductions on payments they make.

All recipients of payments covered by the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961, are given a Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN), a 10-digit number. Taxpayers should be informed that form 49B is necessary when requesting a TAN.

What is TAN?

Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN), a 10-digit unique number provided to all businesses that may collect tax on behalf of the Income Tax department, is similar to PAN (i.e., permanent account number), which is a unique number assigned to all taxpayers.

When completing your TDS (tax deducted at source) and TCS (tax collection source) returns, TAN is required (for both electronic and paper). This 10-digit alphanumeric number is given to those who must withhold tax from payments made under the 1961 Indian Income Tax Act.

Additionally, the TDS organisations that are required to withhold tax on behalf of the Income Tax Department must provide this figure. Further, if the businesses fail to attain this amount after deducting TDS, they will be penalised INR 10,000. In addition, banks have the right to refuse transactions if the assessee fails to mention the TAN.

How does the TAN application work?

By completing and submitting Form 49B, you may apply for a new TAN. Any facilitation facilities designed to receive e-TDS returns are where this may be done. An entity may apply for a TAN either in person at the Income Tax Department or online at the Income Tax Department's official website.

Always remember that Form 49B is the sole procedure to request the issue of a TAN. In the event of physical applications to the Income Tax Department, no supporting documentation will be needed. However, if filing a form 49B online, the acknowledgement obtained after submission must be saved and sent to the Income Tax Department.

Information on Form 49B

The following is a list of what is on Form 49B:

• Choose information about the office's name, address, type of government it falls under, who will be responsible for paying taxes on the company's behalf, the company's divisions, its branches, and whether the TAN is issued in the name of an individual or a HUF (Hindu Undivided Family), among other details.
• To choose information about an entity's address, including the full address—including the street name, block number, state, town, street number, region, etc.—from the drop-down menu.
• Information about the deductor's country of origin.
• Permanent account number (PAN) must be supplied, if appropriate.
• This part requires completing the Existing Tax Deduction Number and Existing Tax Collection Number.
• The deadline for submitting the form must be stated as the following piece of information.
• The tax collector or deductor must provide information on the assessing officer. If the information isn't accessible, it may be evaluated on the income tax website.
• Form 49B must be filled out entirely since any blank areas won't be considered.
• It is required that the person file and submit the tax list of their designation.
• Verify that the applicant's address is in India.

Form 49B's format and contents

• Information about the person's title and the office is provided in the first section.
• The individual's full residence address is required in the second section.
• The nationality of the individual is disclosed in the third section.
• If required, the PAN number is given by the individual in the same section.
• The next part requires completing the Tax Deduction Number and Collection Number fields.
• Information about form submissions is required in the next section.
• The applicant must include the assessing officer's contact information.
• The applicant must provide their personal information to confirm that the information listed above is accurate.
• The applicant must then sign the form or leave a left thumb imprint to finish the Form 49B submission process.

Things to avoid doing while submitting Form 49B

• Please refrain from overwriting or editing the form. Such a situation should prevent the application form from being approved.
• Don't use POI or POA if they are not part of the person's name.
• Do not provide any extra information in the form, such as a birthmark, rank, markings, or designation.
• Do not include the husband's name in the father’s name section for female candidates.
• Avoid initialisation, and don't shorten your names.
• If you currently have a TAN, do not apply for another one. Under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act of 1961, the applicant would be assessed a fine of Rs 10,000 in any such instance.

How can I get a TAN number?

For TAN applications, there are two alternative methods. Online paperless mode is the first mode, while offline is the second.

Applying for a TAN online:
• Choose "Online application for TAN (form 49B)" from the drop-down menu at https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/tan/index.html.
• Click the "Select button" after choosing the category of deductors from the drop-down menu.
• Fill in the required information on the form, and this screen (which is indicated with a *) will display.
• If the applicant's data is invalid at any elevated level of validation, an error message will be shown on the screen.
• Forms may only be submitted when mistakes have been fixed.
• If there are no formal level mistakes, a confirmation screen displaying the applicant's data will be shown.
• If a candidate needs to make changes to his completed application, he may do so by choosing the Edit option.
• If the information provided is accurate, the applicant may choose the confirm option.
• An acknowledgement slip will be created upon successful payment of fees (if DD or Cheque are not the chosen payment methods).
• The applicant must save the acknowledgement, print it, and mail it to NSDL at the following address:

NSDL e- government Infrastructure Limited, 5th floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No.997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune-411016.

It is essential to label the exterior of the envelope with "APPLICATION FOR TAN-Acknowledgment Number." (For instance, "APPLICATION TAN - 88301020000244").

Applying for a TAN online using a digital signature certificate:
• From the TAN module at https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/tan/form49B.html, choose the "Apply Online" option.
• The DSC-based online TAN application option should be chosen.
• Choose the relevant application category.
• Apply online by filling out the form.
• Add the digital signature to the form together with the DSC of the authorised signatory.
• There is only an online payment option available for DSC-based applications.
• Make a receipt for acknowledgement with a 14-digit acknowledgement number.
• People making requests for DSC-based TANs do not need to provide supporting documentation to the NSDL e-Gov website.

• The form must be completed in block letters and English.
• Only Indian addresses are permitted as the applicant's addresses.
• The closest TIN-FC must receive the application form 49B that has been correctly completed and signed.
• If a left-hand thumb imprint is utilised, it must be confirmed under official seal and stamp by a magistrate, notary public, or gazetted officer.
• Form 49B is the only document that has to be filed.
• Please refer to the instructions on the Form.
• At the TIN-FC desk, a processing charge of Rs. 65 (incl. GST) must be paid.

Guidelines for submitting Form 49B

When completing Form 49B, you must bear the following in mind:

• Form 49B must be completed in block letters and English.
• Fill in one letter (alphabet, integer, or punctuation mark) in each box for improved reading and clarity.
• The form must be confirmed by a Magistrate, a Notary Public, or a Gazetted Officer under their official seal and stamp if you want to utilise your left-hand imprint.
• In the application form, deductors and collectors must include the assessing officer's (TDS/TCS) contact information. The Income Tax office is a simple place to get these facts.
• Deductors and collectors must also fill out the Range Code, AO Number, Area Code, etc. You may also get these specifics from the Income Tax office or the TIN Facilitation Centre (TIN-FC).
• Make sure to fill out the form thoroughly.
• Where appropriate, you must complete the "Designation of the Person Responsible for Making Payment/Collecting Tax" box.
• Only Indian addresses are permitted for applicants.

Documents Needed to Apply for a TAN

If you submit your TAN application online, you may also need to provide the Income Tax Department with a copy of the receipt acknowledgement. On the other hand, as soon as Form 49B is filed on the NSDL website, you will get the TAN acknowledgement.

However, you may not need any further supporting documents if you need to file and submit the physical application.

Advice on completing Form 49B

• In Form 49B, you must provide information about the Assessing Officer.
• The form must be filled with information such as income tax circle, area code, and district. To learn how to determine this information, read the page.
• Get the form certified by a gazetted official, notary, or magistrate if you want to sign the form using your left thumb imprint instead of your signature.
• Only if you are an individual applicant can you authorise the acknowledgement with a thumbprint. You must sign the acknowledgement sheet if you applied to another deductor category.
• Incomplete Form 49B will be deemed to have any blank sections.
• It is required that you mention your designation on the form.
• The address entered into the form must be an Indian address.

Payment options for fees

When you apply for a new TAN, you must pay a cost of Rs. 65. It contains an Rs. 55 application fee and an 18% GST. You may choose from the following methods to pay:

• Demand draught
• Cheque
• Debit Card
• Credit card
• NetBanking

If you decide to pay by demand draft (DD) or check, the payment must be made to NSDL-TIN.

How can you check the progress of your online TAN application?

By visiting the NSDL-TIN website and selecting the status track option, the application deductor may learn the status of his TAN application. You may click on this link to access Status Track: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan.html.

After three days after the submission of his application, the applicant must reference the 14-digit acknowledgement number. The Income-Tax Department website also offers this service.

In addition to checking the progress of the TAN application online, the applicant may also call the TAN Call Centre at (020-27218080) or send an SMS to 57575. (NSDLTAN to 57575, for example)

If TAN has already been allocated, may changes be made?

If TAN has already been assigned and you subsequently discover an error that has to be fixed, you have two options:

• Submit a "Change or correction in TAN data" request online.
• Complete and submit the "Form for Change or Correction in TAN data" to the TIN Facilitation Centres.

Application fee for TAN

To apply for Form 49B, applicants must pay a fee of Rs 65 + GST to TIN-FCs. Numerous payment gateways are available for processing payments, including checks, demand draughts, net banking, credit cards, and debit cards.
