During the policy term

How to be sure even during your policy term

Here are a few things you should keep in mind to be sure about your policy even during your policy tenure. Don't fall prey to temptation/inducements/hoaxes/threats without realizing the benefits of holding policy for the full term or checking the truth behind calls/claims.Here are a few things you should know.

Inducement to purchase insurance is illegal

Example #1

If someone approaches you saying,"You have won a lucky draw and are entitled to a 5 gm gold coin, if you surrender your current policy and buy a new policy and maintain it for 1 year!" Think again, if it sounds too good to be true, it definitely isn't!

  • Inducements (free policy, gold coins etc.) are not permitted in the promotion of any insurance product
  • Avoidsurrender of the policy in the hope of material inducements. You may actually lose accrued financial benefits and buyanother policy for the wrong reasons.

Check for claims that sound legitimate but are not

Example #2

If someone says, "Buy this policy and hold on to it for more than 45 days, to avail an interest free loan of Rs.20 Lakhs!"

Think again, if it sounds too good to be true, it isn't

  • All life insurance products do not provide loan facility, so always read all policy related documents to know the benefits you enjoy with the particular policy offered to you

Check suspicious refund calls made on phone

Example #3

If someone says, "I'm from IRDA and you can receive complete refund on your existing policies if you switch to the policy of another company."

Check for suspicious policy replacement offers

Example #4

If someone says, "I'm calling on behalf of IRDA, we are declaring a bonus for all existing customers, who are surrendering their current policy to buy a new policy which they should hold on to for a few months."

Check for suspect retroactive benefits on current policy

Example #5

If someone says,

"I am calling on behalf of IRDA to inform you that you are eligible to receive survival benefits from your current policy, provided you buy a new policy."

Check for suspect retroactive benefits on current policy

Example #6

If someone says, "I'm calling on behalf of IRDA to inform you that if you surrender your current policy to buy a new one and also hold on to it for a few months, you will get additional benefits such as..."

Please note that in all such examples IRDA would never make such calls for additional benefits, declaring bonus, surrendering policies etc.

  • Beware of such fraudulent calls, always cross-check all scheme related information and benefits either on the company's website or by visiting the branch
  • In case you receive such calls, immediately lodge a complaint by calling your insurance service provider with the details of the caller (phone number, name of the caller etc.)
